Bay Bread Boulangerie (Baked Goodies / Dessert)
San Francisco: Pacific Heights
This is my favorite boulangerie in the Bay Area and is owned by restaurateur Pascal Rigo. Everything is excellent, but my favorites are the canneles (vanilla custardy things that are crisp on the outside but eggy and gooey on the inside), the macarons (not American macaroons), and chocolate chip brioche. In addition to the sweet stuff, you can get savories to go for a light lunch (e.g., pizza slices, quiches, etc.). Every time I come here, there is a line with at least two French-speakers in it. Though there are no seats, other Rigo venues with similar offerings are actual cafes. They include La Table O & CO (Marina), Boulange de Cole (Cole Valley), Boulange de Polk (Russian Hill), and Boulange de Fillmore, which is only half a block away.
