Fleur de Lys (French)
San Francisco: Union Square

This is an all-out special occasion, pricey French place. I love it. The dining room sits under a silk tented fabric reminiscent of Monet’s Water Lilies. If you like foie gras, you're going to love this place. It's all over the menu...in about five different forms.

The service is also great. We've lived on the West Coast so long that we forgot that there are places with suit and tie dress codes! However, although we were a little under-dressed, no one on the staff made us feel that way. When a lady next to us didn't eat much of one course, the maitre d' asked if he could replace the dish with another. The chef looks at every single plate when it goes back in the kitchen. It's that kind of place!

Cuisine: French
Price: Tasting menus are $70-90.
Dress: Jackets for men (now we know), business casual and up for women. Don’t wear jeans, even if they are of the $150 variety.
Noise: This is the type of place where you can definitely have a quiet conversation but you won’t feel that the restaurant is too quiet.
Reservations: Highly recommended, and book far in advance. Especially because chef Hubert Keller recently appeared on Bravo's Top Chef. (OpenTable)
Payment: Cash and credit cards.
Parking: Street parking around here is challenging but there are a ton of paid lots nearby. In your getup, don’t take mass transit.
Date place? Of course. You should have known by the time I got to the bit about the silk tent.
