Grand Cafe (French)
San Francisco: Union Square

Although Grand Café is connected to a hotel and is often filled with tourists, the food is quite good. It’s classic French bistro (e.g., cassoulet, leg of lamb, etc.) and the décor was modeled after La Coupole in Paris. In other words, it’s beautiful. The place has high ceilings and despite the lively buzz in the restaurant, it’s pretty relaxing. They’re known for the banana cream pie, which, as you can imagine, is an upscale version.

Cuisine: French
Price: Entrees are $15-25.
Dress: Chic casual and up. Sevens and Diesels are OK, faded 501s and shorts aren’t.
Noise: Not a problem.
Reservations: Recommended. (OpenTable)
Payment: Cash and credit cards.
Parking: Street parking around here is challenging but there are a ton of paid lots nearby. Or, take the 38 bus or BART to Powell.
Date place? Yes, if your date doesn’t mind mingling with tourists.
