O Chame (Japanese / Noodles)
East Bay: Berkeley

O Chame has been on Michael Bauer's Top 100 list for the past 7 years. Don't go expecting over-the-top food, though. Fresh ingredients and subtle flavors reign here. The signature appetizer is the tuna sashimi with braised leeks, which are my favorite part of the dish, and everyone talks about the udon. I also like the pork tenderloin in broth served with white rice. Eat half and take the rest home. The pork tastes even better the next day once the flavors have seeped in even more.

Cuisine: Japanese / Noodles
Price: Entrees are $10-20.
Dress: Chic casual and up. Sevens and Diesels are OK, faded 501s and shorts aren’t.
Noise: Not a problem.
Reservations: Recommended.
Payment: Cash and credit cards.
Parking: Berkeley's Fourth Street is always bustling, so allow an extra 5 minutes to find parking. Check the lot in the back of the restaurant first.
Date place? Yes, and it won't break the bank.
