Pesce is owned by the same folks who run Antica Trattoria. They serve Venetian-style tapas. My favorite is the olive gnocchi with rock shrimp. When in season, get the Dungeness crab served on a crispy risotto pancake and the strawberries with zabaglione and sweet balsamic vinegar.
Small plates are $10-20, but you should get about two per person to fill up.
Dress:
Chic casual and up. Sevens and Diesels are OK, faded 501s and shorts aren’t.
Noise:
The restaurant is small and narrow and has a lively bar scene, so it’s loud. The bar takes up a third of the restaurant. You might have to yell, depending on where you get seated. Tables are also very, very close together.
Parking in Russian Hill is challenging to put it mildly. However, you’ll have better luck if you go further away from the restaurant towards Galileo High School, which is about a four-minute walk. Otherwise, take a Van Ness or Polk bus.
Date place?
If I were to base this solely on food and location, absolutely. But given the noise and crowdedness, no. Plus, it’s more fun to share small plates with a larger group anyway.
