Shan Dong (Chinese / Noodles)
East Bay: Oakland

Shan Dong is famous for its huge dumplings, chewy noodles, and breads. All are made on the premises. Though Shan Dong is busiest at lunch, stop by for a Friday night dinner and you'll see the staff hand-rolling breads for its Saturday northern Chinese-style dim sum. The pork and leek dumplings are the best. You can also buy them frozen to make at home ($13-15 per bag).

Cuisine: Chinese / Noodles
Price: Entrees are $5-10.
Dress: Casual. The faded 501s and shorts are OK.
Noise: It's pretty lively at lunch, but noise is generally not a problem.
Reservations: None taken for lunch and none needed for dinner.
Payment: Cash and credit cards.
Parking: Street parking can be tough during the day, but there is an affordable garage across the street.
Date place? Not really. It's kind of a hole-in-the-wall...
