South Park Cafe (French)
San Francisco: SOMA

South Park Café is one of those overlooked places in the city, but I’m grateful for that. It’s easy to secure a reservation even on Friday night. The framed black and whites of France on buttery yellow walls give the bistro a neighborhood feel. The food is also delicious. The menu is full of French classics, like blood sausage and goat cheese tarts. My personal favorites are the “pig” salad (pork confit frisee), steak frites, and profiteroles.

Cuisine: French
Price: The daily 3-course prix fixe is a deal at $30, especially since you choose right off the regular menu. Otherwise, entrees are $15-20.
Dress: Chic casual and up. Sevens and Diesels are OK, faded 501s and shorts aren’t.
Noise: Generally not a problem.
Reservations: Recommended. (OpenTable)
Payment: Cash and credit cards.
Parking: Finding street parking in South Park is easy unless there is a game at nearby AT&T Park.
Date place? Definitely. The location at the edge of quiet South Park adds to the feeling that you’re stumbling upon a hidden gem.
