I will be the first to admit that the food here is oily. However, that's par for the course with Taiwanese food and if you're craving it, there is no better place than Spices 3 in the East Bay (#1 and 2 are in San Francisco).
Though Taiwanese food is best shared, my friends and I always fight over the popcorn chicken appetizer (despite the oil). As for entrees, I love the beef satay noodles that come on a sizzling iron plate (despite the oil) and the fried pork chop noodle soup (oily again!).
To combat the oil, drink plenty of hot tea. Otherwise, frequent this place in moderation and you'll be fine!
Street parking can be difficult during the day, but there are a few pay lots nearby. At night, you shouldn't have any problems.
Date place?
Yes, as long as you don't mind the oil and the lack of after-dinner options in downtown Oakland. Though casual, Spices 3 isn't your typical Taiwanese hole-in-the-wall. At dinner, candles dress up the tables, and the maroon walls give the whole place a modern feel.
