Tamarindo Antojeria Mexicana (Mexican / Small Plates)
East Bay: Oakland

Tamarindo Antojeria is a cue of downtown Oakland's slow but steady revitalization. It's located in historic Old Oakland and adds a welcome diversity to an area that consists mostly of sandwich delis and Chinese food (though it is good Chinese food). I love Tamarindo's sopecitos (corn cakes topped with various ingredients), empanaditas, and tamales.

The place is very popular for lunch. For a more relaxed experience, go for dinner.

Cuisine: Mexican / Small Plates
Price: Tapas are $5-10.
Dress: Chic casual and up. Sevens and Diesels are OK, faded 501s and shorts aren’t.
Noise: The lively crowd and the hardwood floors make raising your voice a necessity.
Reservations: Recommended.
Payment: Cash and credit cards.
Parking: Street parking can be difficult during the day, but there are a few pay lots nearby. At night, you shouldn't have any problems.
Date place? Yes, as long as you don't mind the lack of after-dinner options in downtown Oakland.
