Tao Cafe (Vietnamese / Vegetarian-Friendly)
San Francisco: Mission

This is one of the most overlooked places in the Mission. The food is good, yet the restaurant is almost always half empty. It offers great value through a 3-course prix fixe involving its noodle options on Sunday through Thursday. My favorite is the duck confit served with egg noodles. I also really like the bass served with plantains, rice, and a light curry sauce.

Cuisine: Vietnamese / Vegetarian-Friendly
Price: If you go Sunday through Thursday, the prix fixe is $16 ($15 for the vegetarian version). Choose an appetizer (egg rolls, imperial rolls, or green papaya salad with beef confit), a noodle dish (there are rice and egg noodle options, as well as soup and st
Dress: Chic casual and up. Sevens and Diesels are OK, faded 501s and shorts aren’t.
Noise: Not a problem at all.
Reservations: You won’t need reservations if you go on a weeknight. However, be safe and call ahead for weekends.
Payment: Cash and credit cards.
Parking: Parking in the Mission is a nightmare at almost any time of the day. However, there are a few paid lots nearby. Alternatively, take BART or a Mission or Valencia bus.
Date place? Yes. It’s dimly lit, quiet, and nicely decorated in a colonial Vietnam kind of way. Try to get the single window table to the right of the restaurant as you walk in.
