Thanh Long is owned by the same people who own Crustacean and the menus are virtually identical, but the restaurant lacks the tacky neon décor of its more famous siblings. This place is the original. Come here for the roasted crab and garlic noodles. Other dishes, such as the grilled chicken, are good, but the crab and garlic noodles are unmatched elsewhere.
Crabs are $30-40 each depending on the season, but unless you’re a big eater, two people can share one. Save room for plenty of garlic noodles. A plate if them is around $10.
Dress:
Chic casual. The restaurant will give you a bib if you order the crab, as you will be dismantling the sucker yourself. It can get very messy. Wear something with short sleeves so you won’t have to bother pushing your sleeves up as you eat the crab.
Noise:
Noise is not too big of a problem here, but you’ll be too busy stuffing your face with crab to talk to anyone anyway.
Reservations:
You must make reservations. If not, expect to wait at least 1-2 hours. Even then, you might not get in.
Payment:
Cash and credit cards.
Parking:
Parking in the Sunset is terrible, but I’ve never had a bad experience while trying to park for Thanh Long. Just in case, allow an extra 10 minutes, though.
Date place?
I’m hesitant to recommend this as a date place given the messiness of eating crab and the heavy garlic content. Still, it’s a unique experience and the food is really good.
