Wood Tavern (American)
East Bay: Oakland

Wood Tavern would be that perfect neighborhood restaurant...if only you could get in on a moment's notice. Unfortunately, that's not the way it goes most nights unless you arrive right at 5:00 to snag a bar seat. But whether you're at the bar or a table, you'll be treated to intelligent service and mouth-watering food.

Pork is a forte here. If you are brave enough, get the pork belly with poached egg appetizer. Yes, pork belly is the one where the pork is served with the fatty layers still intact. Then go for the humongous pork chop. Though the portions are large, save room for dessert. The profiteroles are heavenly.

As for the service, they are professionals here. The gentleman who served me at the bar one night acted as if he owned the place, and I mean in a positive way. "I hope you enjoyed it tonight and come back often." I would if I could get in.

P.S. Go at lunch to guarantee yourself a table.

Cuisine: American
Price: Entrees are $15-25.
Dress: Chic casual and up. Sevens and Diesels are OK, faded 501s and shorts aren’t.
Noise: The restaurant is small and tables are close together, so you will need to raise your voice.
Reservations: Highly recommended. They're packed even at off-hours on weeknights!
Payment: Cash and credit cards.
Parking: Street parking isn't too bad, but allow an extra 5 minutes to find it.
Date place? Sure, but you will be seated in close proximity to other tables, so it's not the best place for quiet conversation.
